General description of activities: This Office’s principal area of activity is to protect individuals’ data protection rights by regulating the processing of personal data carried out by data controllers. This includes the investigation of data protection and freedom of information complaints, raising awareness and co-operating with other data protection authorities.
General description of enforcement actions (powers of investigation, inspection and/or sanction): The law gives the Commissioner the following powers:

  • for the purpose of investigating data subjects’ complaints, have access to personal data processed by the data controller;
  • enter and search any premises of the controller;
  • intervene by a Rectification Order, Erasure Order or a Stop Processing Order;
  • impose administrative fines;
  • initiate court proceedings.
