Office of the Privacy Commissioner
Our mission is to be an effective, modern privacy regulator – both in New Zealand and internationally.
The Privacy Act 2020 (which came into force on 1 December 2020) has given the Privacy Commissioner a greater range of enforcement powers, including the ability to issue compliance orders, and to issue access determinations. The Act was modernised, and businesses and organisations now have clearer obligations to report to affected people when things go wrong with customer or client data.
We are moving from focusing mainly on individual harm, to identifying systemic issues, being aware of potential harm and intervening early. As an effective and modern regulator, we aim to focus on the broader public benefit of privacy protection.
